If your child has short nails, they are able to play with proper posture and positioning on their instrument. Here is an example of how short their nails should be.
Minimal white of the nail is visible and the finger tip is exposed. The finger tip is the area right under the end of the nailbed at the top of the finger pad. In orchestra, we play on our finger tips to make the best sound.
Long nails that extend behind the nailbed past the finger tip are too long for orchestra class.
This makes it impossible for students to achieve
good sound
comfortable playing
full marks on playing tests
If your child comes to school with long nails, they will be asked to trim them with nail clippers provided by me. If the nails are acrylic / press on's they will be asked to remove them that same night at home or to make a nail appointment for that same weekend.
If the student consistently has long nails at school, they will be written up and given a detention slip to get signed by a parent. The detention will be before school at 7:30am or after school until 4:30pm. After repeated write-ups, they may also be subject to In-School Suspension based on administrator discretion.
